Everything Parents Of A Golden Retriever Should Know

If you look around your area for dogs, you're likely to see a happy dog wagging its tail with long shiny golden hair; we call them a golden retriever. The golden retriever is the fourth most popular breed in the United States, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC), and for a good reason.

They make lovely family dogs since they're so friendly. These have a long lifespan and are also easy to train, making them a popular choice among many individuals.

Here's what you need to know about your golden retriever to help them live a healthy and long life.

1.Temperament

Golden retrievers have friendly, sociable, and outgoing personalities, making them an excellent addition to your family. They have a more energetic and playful attitude towards life than some other breeds, so you'll have to be on your toes and play with your golden retriever a lot.

2.Training

Golden retrievers are very obedient, eager to please, and intelligent dogs. They are very good at learning. Therefore, it's comparatively easier to train them than other breeds.

It's better to teach your golden retrievers some basic house training and obedience skills like not digging, potty training, etc., when they are a puppy.

You can also train your golden retrievers to be guide dogs for the blind.

3.Grooming and care

Golden retrievers require a lot of activity; they enjoy swimming and playing outside. Hence, they require frequent grooming. However, their water-repellent, thick double coat hair is easy to care for.

You can control the shedding of your golden retrievers by brushing their coat twice a week. They have fast-growing, strong nails that you should regularly trim to avoid breaking, splitting, or overgrowth. You should also brush their teeth regularly with good-quality dog toothpaste.

4.Health

Golden retrievers are a pretty healthy breed with a 12- to 14-year lifespan. However, some health complications, including cardiac disease, cancer, eye diseases, hip and elbow dysplasia, skin diseases, might develop if you don't look after them.

Therefore you must get your golden retrievers checked regularly and pay regular visits to the vet every three months for a thorough check-up.

5.Diet

Good food and sufficient nutrition are crucial throughout a golden retriever's life. A female golden retriever should stand 21.5 to 22.6 inches tall and weigh 55 to 65 pounds, while a male golden retriever should be 23 to 24 inches tall and weigh 65 to 75 pounds.

It's better to get breed-specific formulas for your dogs or the ones that your vet suggests. Food is something you need to pay extra attention to to ensure your dog stays healthy. You should give them sufficient food depending on your dog's size.

Because the golden retriever is a large breed dog, consult your veterinarian for advice on the optimal food for your pet's health.
